Don't hear any sound?
Check that your speakers are turned on and plugged into the proper connector on your computer (generally the green jack, sometimes labled Line Out). If your speakers are plugged into an amplifier, check that they are connected proeprly. Also make sure your speakers are not muted and the volume is at a comfortable listening level (both on the speakers and from your computer/device). Your volume should look like this . If you see this then your speakers are muted.
Don't see any volume controls?
If you do not see a volume setting on your computer, make sure your sound card is enabled and it is set to display the volume adjustments. You will need to go to the Sound properties of the settings of your computer. On some computers you can adjust the sound by pressing volume keys on the keyboard. There is generally a mute key which if enabled will turn off all the sounds on the computer. Look for these on the top row of your keyboard.
Speakers not balanced?
Your speakers are balanced when you hear the 3rd tone played on both speakers. It should appear to come from a center point in-between the speakers. If your speakers do not sound balanced, adjust their position and check the balance/volume level of the speakers individually on the amplifier or computer/device.

Speakers sound distorted?
First check the equalizer on the device (if it has it), it might be set inproperly. If your speakers have a pair of wires or audio signal cables set to them, check that you matched the colors up properly or your speakers will be 'out of phase'. If they still sound distorted check that your cable or speakers are not physically damanged.

You might have a mono cable instead of a stereo cable connected to your speakers. Stereo will have 2 channels of sound, left and right. Mono will sound the same on both.
